Healing Cap For Dental Implant

Healing Cap For Dental Implant, also known as Abutment, is an element of the implant system and are a part of the implant superstructure. The healing cap’s purpose is to connect the artificial root with the crown.

What is a Healing Cap?

Healing cap is the link between the tooth implant and crown. The adapter connects both single and solid prostheses. The support element corresponds to the thread, inclination and material of the implant.

Each implant system has its own set of various standard abutments. The greater the choice of different configurations and sizes of healing caps, the easier it is for the prosthodontist to solve any clinical situation. Expensive popular systems have a wide range of these important spare parts, as they say, for all occasions. And so they are preferable. Therefore, the doctor often makes the choice of an implant system based on the possibilities for prosthetics provided by a particular dental products manufacturer. Equally important is the degree of accuracy and reliability of the connection between the healing cap and the implant. It’s like a designer, the details of which must be perfectly fitted to each other. The service life of the entire structure largely depends on this. And here, as a rule, the simpler and more budgetary the system, the more flaws and design inconsistencies it encounters.

Custom and Standard Healing Cap - What's the Difference?

In general, as the name implies, the abutment is made individually in a single copy and has a shape strictly necessary for a particular case. In the second case, we are dealing with a factory stamped product. A standard titanium abutment is installed in the oral cavity. Such a standard “cylinder” does not repeat the shape of a real tooth, and does not maintain the correct shape of the gums.

In addition, when fixing the crown on such a healing cap, excess cement can easily penetrate into the gap between it and the gum. An individual zirconium abutment is made strictly according to the desired shape, which is usually what a central incisor should have. The gum is well supported. There is no space for cement “streaks” deep under the gum. The left crown is made on an individual healing cap, the right one is on a standard one. The difference in form is obvious. The first has a more correct, natural profile.

Types of Healing Caps For Dental Implants

The healing cap in dentistry is classified according to the type of manufacture into two large groups: standard (stamped) and individual products. The last models are characterized by high cost, as they are made according to the individual features of the implant and tooth.

Standard Healing Caps

Stamped healing caps products have a number of disadvantages, and in appearance they resemble a pin. Experts say that it is difficult to achieve high aesthetics with standard abutments. In addition, the products practically do not support the gums, as they do not repeat the anatomical features of the teeth. When installing, there is a risk of cement mass getting under the gum and the development of Peri-implantitis. However, standard dental implants healing caps are popular for their availability and prevalence.

Custom Healing Caps

Custom abutments are made taking into account the anatomy of the jaw and tooth. Therefore, they are free from the disadvantages that are typical for factory models. The bonding link is predominantly made from zirconium dioxide. Zirconium abutments are durable and aesthetic.
