Zygomatic implants are considered an alternative for mouths with little bone in the upper jaw area. The zygomatic implant is an ideal treatment for cases of severe resorption in the maxillary bone.
What are Zygomatic Implants ?
The zygomatic implant is a long implant that is indicated when the quantity or quality of bone is insufficient to anchor regular implants. They have this name because the zygomatic bone is used, which is a bone of greater hardness located in the area of the cheekbones. And, therefore, it allows you to anchor the implants even when you do not have enough bone in the upper jaw.
Characteristics of Zygomatic Implants
Zygomatic Implants are made of Titanium – A biocompatible material that allows adequate osseointegration and does not produce implant rejection reactions.
For zygomatic implants, screws are much longer than those of conventional implants. They can measure from 30 to 52.5 mm in length compared to 8 to 14 mm that are approximately those of conventional implants. This extra length allows them to reach the zygomatic bone, where they will finally be anchored.

The placement of zygomatic implants is indicated in patients who have severe bone loss in the upper jaw, in the alveolar bone and\or it is not possible to place conventional implants.
This lack of bone may be due to:
- Pathological processes such as periodontal diseases, carcinomas, etc …
- Physiological resorptions derived from missing teeth.
By nature, the posterior region of the maxilla is one of the places most affected by bone loss and also one of the most difficult to rehabilitate.
When patients present with these large resorptions, the fabrication of a well-fitting total prosthesis is a problem for both specialists and patients.
For more than a decade, zygomatic implants have made it possible to perform complicated restorations without the need for more complex and less predictable interventions.
Zygomatic Implants - Contraindications
Zygomatic dental implants are not indicated for patients with uncontrolled systemic diseases, smokers or alcoholics and bisphosphonate users. The reason is that these habits can interfere with the success of treatment.
It is also not recommended in those patients who, having adequate bone support, can undergo a less invasive treatment with conventional implants.
Advantages of Zygomatic Implants
If you are a patient with extremely atrophied jaws, treatment with zygomatic implants has many advantages:

- It does not involve scars on the outside of your face, everything is done through your oral cavity.
In most cases, an immediate load prosthesis can be placed, temporarily solving the aesthetic and functional needs of the patient.
Cost of zygomatic implants
The cost of zygomatic implants is approximately 2000 euros each. And a minimum of 2 or 4 implants are usually needed to support the prosthesis in the posterior area of the upper jaw. Therefore, a complete rehabilitation of the upper arch can cost between 12,000 and 18,000 euros (between 50,000 – 80, 000 ILS | 32,000 – 50,000 USD) with this implantology technique.
Normally, 2 or 4 zygomatic implants are placed in the posterior area, combined with conventional dental implants in the anterior part, to place the entire upper arch with fixed teeth.
Zygomatic implants eliminate the need for bone grafts for the rehabilitation of the upper jaw with high bone resorption. It is a complex implantology technique, but it is not without risks.
